How a Water-Cooled Copper Induction Coil Works

The induction coil is one of the most critical components in a medium frequency induction furnace.

It generates the electromagnetic field required to heat the metal charge.

Copper construction

Induction coils are commonly manufactured from high-conductivity copper tubing.

The copper conductor carries high-frequency electrical current while cooling water circulates through the internal passage.

Water cooling

During operation, the coil generates heat.

Continuous water circulation removes this heat and helps maintain the coil within its required operating conditions.

Cooling-water quality and flow are therefore important parts of furnace design.

Electrical insulation

The coil requires reliable electrical insulation.

Industrial induction coils may use insulation coatings and reinforced insulation systems designed for high electrical strength.

Mechanical construction

The coil must also withstand:

  • Electromagnetic forces
  • Thermal expansion
  • Furnace vibration
  • Mechanical stress
  • Repeated heating and cooling cycles

Magnetic yoke

Magnetic yokes are installed around the coil to help control magnetic flux and reduce unwanted magnetic leakage.

The coil and yoke therefore form an important electromagnetic assembly.

Conclusion

The induction coil should never be considered an isolated component.

Its electrical design, cooling circuit, insulation, magnetic yoke and furnace geometry must be matched to the medium frequency power supply and furnace capacity.
